Alemania albergará la primera supercomputadora europea con capacidades de exaescala, mientras que cuatro nuevas supercomputadoras de gama media estarán alojadas en Grecia, Hungría, Irlanda y Polonia.
La Empresa Conjunta Europea de Computación de Alto Rendimiento (EuroHPC JU) anunció el miércoles (15 de junio) que seleccionó los cinco sitios para alojar y operar la próxima generación de supercomputadoras europeas.
La empresa conjunta es una asociación público-privada en la que participan instituciones de la UE, estados miembros y empresas privadas para impulsar las capacidades de supercomputación de Europa.
“Estos cinco nuevos supercomputadores nos apoyarán en el desarrollo de modelos de alta precisión. Esto nos ayudará a manejar retos sociales y a facilitar la investigación avanzada en los campos del cambio del clima, cosmología, ingeniería, ciencia de los materiales y más”, dijo Margrethe Vestager, Vice-Presidente de la Comisión responsable por el portafolio digital.

Una oleada de supercomputadores europeos
De acuerdo a Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Ministro Federal Alemán de Educación e Investigación, dos supercomputadores más exascale también serán lanzados en Munich y Stuttgart en los próximos años en cooperación con los estados alemanes de Baviera y Baden-Württemberg.
El anuncio de Euro HPC JU viene justo después de que LUMI, el más poderoso supercomputador hasta la fecha de Europa, fuera inaugurado el 13 de junio en Finlandia.
